Welcome from the Chair of Graduate Studies and Research, Dr. Meridith Lovell-Johnston, Lakehead University

Welcome everyone to the 2021 summer session of the Joint PhD in Educational Studies hosted this year by Lakehead University’s Faculty of Education. This year, we meet virtually, as with so many other experiences we have had over the previous year. Yet, although we can acknowledge the challenges of rethinking and reshaping the modes of our interactions around our community and our research aspirations, this is, in fact, an opportunity to connect in new ways and reconsider what we know and think about research. Over the past year in my role as Chair of Graduate Studies and Research in Education, I have had the pleasure to see our doctoral students coming together as a community to support one another, attending events across the three universities that might have been more private to one university such as academic presentations and connecting with new colleagues in the process. I have also witnessed the incredible flexibility and creative problem-solving capacity of students adapting their original research plans to accommodate pandemic restrictions that vary between different institutions, often on a day-by-day basis. This time has truly challenged us to rethink what is most vital about the research we do and how to answer our questions using new methods.

I hope the time you spend in the summer session helps you to do the very same things: to immerse yourself in your studies,

form connections, think deeply about your research and reconsider and reshape your identities as researchers.
